Binged the whole manhwa. Interesting, but has its own downfalls.
TLDR: Art is good, magic system is convoluted, protagonist is OP but not in a palatable way.
Plot is interesting, but I feel like this is one of those stories that revolves too much around the protagonist. Any conflict or outside pressure doesn’t feel very impactful because he always figures things out without a problem and there don’t seem to be any actual consequences. Any characters that oppose him are turned into cannon fodder to merely showcase how OP he is and they immediately become repentant afterwards with no growth. Even supporting characters feel like shells at times that just serve to uplift the protagonist to the point that they themselves can feel hollow and one-dimensional.
The only other character that may have been interesting is Amy, an implied love interest. Doesn’t seem promising to me though because she’s basically a condescending brat that’s painted out to be a tsundere-type character. For reference, she literally commanded gangsters in the past and watched the protagonist get beaten up, and went so far as to joke about stripping him… What? So far, she doesn’t seem very redeemable because her true personality is hot garbage. When I think of villainous characters who were redeemed, I think of Zuko or even the Ice King. They did bad, but didn’t hurt anyone to the point of endangering them (IIRC), and there was actually more to their personality than just being a big bad evil guy. Amy is really just hot garbage that’s thinly veiled by her depiction of being a tsundere.
The relationships in this are weird. We spend a good bulk of the first few chapters establishing his friendship with a guy his age, and subsequently gets integrated into a Duchy(?) by way of his (boy)friend taking an oath to be his sword or something. Sweet, but we literally never see him again after that. No letters, no correspondence, no POV, nothing. Again, just used as a way to catapult the protagonist further, and when their time is done, they’re chucked into the corner. Same with his parents that existed solely to raise him then also sacrifice themselves to push him into greatness. Yeah, that’s sort of what parents are for, but… That doesn’t have to be their sole purpose. This whole manhwa is basically a huge Bechdel test except the challenge is to find a character that exists outside of serving the protagonist.
Similarly, the romantic aspects are also forced and icky with age gaps + unbalanced power dynamics. A teacher literally even brushes off the suggestion of her liking him, taking it lightly saying that it’s “natural between man and woman”. I don’t think anything is natural between a ~30 year old and a 17 year old, but I digress. The protagonist feels a little harem-y which is sort of hilarious because he’s basically married to magic.
Also, the magic system just feels convoluted. Interesting, sure, but good god why are we out here with a whole exposition about adding mass to photons and going beyond the realm of numbers?? Even I don’t want to explain it because it feels tedious just to think about it.
All in all it was promising, but it feels like the Harry Potter series. Not in the sense that they’re both about magic, but because anything and everything seems to revolve around the protagonist. You can have OP protagonists with a supporting cast that still stand strong as their own characters (think OPM and MP100). But this isn’t one of them, in my opinion.
