ML intentionally mistreats FL once she’s dependent on him in order to manipulate her. For example, he restricts her to eating gruel, and won’t allow her to even have snacks unless she socializes in a way that makes him look better, or she has sex with him. He justifies this by saying he promised she wouldn’t have to do any *jobs* as his wife…but he never said she wouldn’t have *responsibilities*.
