Inheritance is very important in these types of stories. So I’m guessing empress is keeping it secret so any opposition won’t try to make her lose the pregnancy, or spread rumours about some affair. If she has a boy then the child becomes a potential direct heir (likelihood that she’ll then entirely ignore/discard her daughter). Something that Beatrice is painfully aware of.
