I mean, he DID murder the only heir of a very powerful Duke, one who is very loved by his people. So the old man was going to die and have his land burned to the ground anyway.
The Duchess’ first wish, the wish to have a son, and the son she got was a devil because she didn’t specify human… I’m guessing the price paid was her daughter, that Giovinetta was meant to be given to her devil “brother” as the price, and that’s why he was so obsessed- because she belonged to him from the start, she was only born to become his.
But the marriage was not stopped, so the devil did not fulfill his end of the bargain.
