I don’t get where his feelings come from? She isn’t described as particularly beautiful neither is she confident, competent, powerful or distinctively kind. She is as bland as a character can get. Did the author nor realize that the MC needs to be convincingly lovable for the reader the understand the MLs plight?

So it’s like the novel she read is the past he remembers kind of, since they bith know of a different version or timeline. He just knows how he felt after she left, where she doesn’t know what happened. The novel could have been helena/lila interpretation of the events that the ML dreamed about. So if it was a past life, and they both regressed, they could be thinking of the past as a dream and as a novel, or the ML could have regressed and the FL could have transmigrated into a novel after the ML regressed, making the story she knew obsolete.
