I actually kind of appreciate that they show that he really struggles with substance use in this since that’s what they decided to go with, and not that he can just miraculously be cured by some superficial love. It makes it pretty believable and hard to swallow, but I appreciate the commitment to realism. I obviously don’t enjoy that he’s not treating her well In the story, but objectively as a reader I enjoy it.
