It was a MAGIC LOVE SPELL accidentally ‘happened’ or whatsoever when he tried to kill her, and no one noticed about that. People just thinking that the Duke fall in love with the lady. And now the MAGIC spell began to faded so he began to act like his ‘actual’ self. Or regarding to him, he was aware how he act towards her, he just feeling something like ‘love’ rather than rational. BECAUSE THE MAGIC LOVE confuse him

Well, what I understand is that the magic circle or something, has him hypnotized or in sort of trance that makes him love her. But the magic has been weakening making him get out of the trance in short periods. Hope it helps ☺️.
