I don’t like how they put the corset in a bad view. I appreciate the fact that it was implied as underwear but that was it. In reality, corsets was like our time bra and shapewear. No one wants sagging boobies. Women back then were able to play sports, ride horses, do housework, and many more things with a corset on. It wasn’t always tight to the point where women couldn’t eat and move. 😩

This is what I came down to the comments to say.
Tightly lacing a corset was never actually a big thing! It was a romance novel trope to give women an excuse to be caught and undressed by male leads. (Yes, some people did tight lace, but some people tight lace NOW and you wouldn’t call that “normal”. Also, there are pregnancy corsets. Ain’t no fabric strong enough to take a noticeably pregnant woman’s waist down at all. That wouldn’t be a thing if the purpose was just vanity.)
A properly laced and made corset is STILL more supportive than even a sports bra because it distributes the force through the whole torso instead of the body disfiguring lines women get in out shoulders and at the bra lines from today’s bras. They also provide AMAZING back support
A lot of the “corsets are bad!” actually came from anti feminist propaganda from the 19th and early 20th century.
The “doctors in ye olden times even thought they were bad!” argument is from accounts of doctors saying women had things like back pain after stopping the use of corsets. You’d have back pain too if you wore a supportive back brace for 8-12 hours a day since puberty and suddenly stopped. You wouldn’t be able to rely on it to take your weight and help you stand up in the oh so straight way we still try to teach to children! (“Sit/stand up straight!” “Don’t slouch!”)
You know what IS damaging and can have long term negative health benefits? High heels.
Don’t take my word for any of this – go do research from credible sources. I find the subject incredibly interesting.
I’m also going to whisper this in your ear: In the 18th and 19th centuries, men wore male corsets, but you don’t hear about THEM right lacing or fainting.

Corsets used to be our underwear but later corsets became so tight that you couldn’t eat or move well and noone is telling them to stop wearing corsets!

I remember being shown photos of what corsets back in the day had done to a woman’s body in a negative way and it was rather uncomfortable to see, reminded me of how geisha’s toes are folded until it fuses so their feet look smaller. Corsets can be nice in some light but in the stories context it’s going off the cons of wearing a corset and I kinda like that.
